Game update 1:

This isn't really day one, I've spent a good amount of time looking into the right tools and I've decided using godot will probably be the best option.  I have to reach out to some artists for some sprites cause I have no talent in that, probably the music too, visually I want it to be similar to Stardew Valley and have a quirky soundtrack like Earthbound.

The story isn't fleshed out either but it involves a world where there was once an ancient civilization that went extinct, people can see remnants of them in some artifacts that have words all over them.  However they have no idea how to translate them or what any of them mean.

Meanwhile they are seeing strange monsters start to appear and attack people in the wilderness.  The main character is a boy who is out one day and finds a tablet that helps translate the language.  He takes the tablet home and later that night he has a dream where someone tells him about the tablet and helps him start to translate it.  Eventually he learns that voice is someone who lived in that civilization and it was destroyed by an evil tyrant who is trying to come back and destroy this civilization too.  The monsters appearing in the wild are ones that he's summoned from the past .

The guy from the past  tells the main character that he has to learn the language from their civilization, the words are like a spell and are the only thing that can defeat the monsters and eventually the tyrant too.  There are 5 tombs in the world that he needs to visit, each ones holds another tablet with more advanced words and rules, but he has to learn enough of the language to be allowed to enter each one.

Once he's mastered enough of the language  he'll be able to confront the tyrant and stop him from destroying the world this time.

There's a few twists here and there, especially with the character guiding him from the past, who he is will be a mystery that becomes important at some point.

The hard part is figuring out the mechanics of the game.  I know the battles will be like a traditional RPG but I don't know how the spells will work yet.  Maybe the monsters will have a word over their head and the character has to choose the translation or maybe the conjugation and more powerful spells require assembling words into a complete sentence as a response to an enemies statement?  It's also hard cause there has to be spoken words in their too but constant, random words like that will get annoying fast.  Maybe it's mostly reading but there are other challenges that focus on audio, maybe something for grinding his level?

II think the mechanics will work themselves out with lots of testing, I need to figure out what's fun but also effective for learning, hopefully it'll help me get improve my Russian a lot too.
